| | Danielle Verbueken | - 25th of May 2008: Eben Emael and Valkenburg Fluwelen grotten

People who didn't showed up were wrong to miss this trip. First we visited the Fort at Eben Emael and learned a bit about WWII history and the fort got captured in few time by the Germans. We also learned about the cruelty war can bring upon people. It was quite interesting but despite the serious topic, there was space for humour and relativation. After a drink, we went with the bus to Valkenburg where we visited Fluwelen grotten (caves) and made a short walk upon the ruin of the old castle. We also broke a record today about amount of different nationalities on the bus: with 39 people we counted 22 different ones!
Belgium 4 Bulgaria 1 China 9 Ecuador 1 Ethiopia 1 Germany 1 Greece 1 India 1 Iran 1 Japan 1 Mexico 1 Moldavia 2 Pakistan 1 Panama 1 Peru 2 Poland 1 Romania 1 Russia 1 Sri Lanka 1 Syria 2 Uganda 2 Vietnam 3

Our visit involves a guided 'medieval' walk from Grote Markt (Old Market Square) to Groot Begijnhof (Great Beguinage), followed by a visit to the Parkabdij (Park Abbey).
Programme We meet at parking 1, Campus Drie Eiken, Universiteitsplein 1, 2610 Wilrijk. The bus must leave at 9:30 a.m. sharp, so please be in time!
About one hour later we meet our (English speaking) guide at the Old Market Square. He'll talk all the way to the Great Beguinage. We should learn a lot from this two hour medieval walk (the gods of Leuven will provide good weather …)
We'll have our picnic on the spot while Karibu treats us to an appropriate drink.
In the afternoon the bus takes us to the Park Abbey (afternoon) for a 1.5 hour guided tour with the prior After some free time for everyone, the bus leaves Leuven at 5:30 p.m. (back at Campus Drie Eiken around 6:30 p.m.)
You can register with martine.depauw@ua.ac.be or danielle.verbueken@ua.ac.be
The bus can only take 50 passengers - register quickly! Fee: € 10 per person (includes: bus ride, guides, free drink and … our company!)
I will also be adding video's (not good quality) on the link My videos.

On 9th February we visited the former 16th century house of Mayor Rockox, close friend of the painter Rubens. Key Minebo was our excellent guide. We had the chance to enjoy the painting by Rubens of Samson and Delilah before it returns to London National Gallery. We learned a lot of the history of the life time of Rockox. | | Danielle Verbueken en Tom(as) Sykora | - 30rd September: Trip to Annevoie
-
-
Excursion to Annevoie-Rouillon, situated at the banks of the river Maas, halfway between Namur and Dinant – renowned for its beautiful gardens - http://www.jardins.dannevoie.be/
Programme
8 a.m. departure by bus from parking 1 (in front of building A), Campus Drie Eiken, Wilrijk Arrival at Annevoie around 9:30 - 10:00 a.m.
10 a.m. guided tour of the Annevoie Gardens. Have a look at the info at www.jardins.dannevoie.be
12 noon picnic at the “Orangerie des Jardins”. Bring a healthy picnic; Karibu treats everyone to a free drink. At 1 pm we have a short walk in the woods.
Those of you who prefer to wait to put on their walking shoes until the afternoon can leave them in the bus at the parking lot and put them on before the 1 p.m. walk. At that time things can be left in/taken from the bus.
From the magnificent panorama here starts the 2 km walk through the valley of the river Maas. There will be slight level differences, so the walk will involve some climbing and descending. The roads do not always allow taking a baby carriage or a buggy. Wear good walking shoes!
We'll continue by bus to nearby Crupet to visit the cave of Saint Anthony (he who returns lost objects …) and have a look at the beautiful "Waterslot" (water castle). Crupet is one of the prettiest villages in Wallonie (the southern, French speaking part of Belgium).
As always Karibu will be generous and treat you to a second drink!
